Introduction to resistance tables
5.1. General
The design resistances given in the tables have been calculated using exact values of the section properties calculated from the specified dimensions. The values obtained have then been rounded to 3 significant figures.
Code ref
EN 1993-1-1 unless otherwise noted
Design resistance tables are given for steel grades S355/HISTAR®355 and S460/HISTAR®460 although not all ranges are available in all grades.
The following partial factors for resistance have been used throughout the website for the calculation of the design resistances. The values are those given in the relevant UK National Annexes to Eurocode 3:
γ M0 | = 1.0 | for the resistance of cross-sections |
γ M1 | = 1.0 | for the resistance of members |
γ M2 | = 1.25 | for bolts |
γ M2 | = 1.25 | for welds |
γ M3 | = 1.25 | for slip resistance at ULS |
γ M3,ser | = 1.1 | for slip resistance at SLS |
5.2. Yield strength
The member resistance tables are based on the following values of yield strength f y.
Code ref
EN 1993-1-1, 3.2.1
EN 10025-2
ETA-10/0156
Steel Grade | Maximum Thickness less than or equal to (mm) | Yield strength f y (N/mm2) |
---|---|---|
S355 | 16 | 355 |
40 | 345 | |
63 | 335 | |
80 | 325 | |
HISTAR®355 | 140 | 355 |
S460 | 16 | 460 |
40 | 440 | |
63 | 430 | |
80 | 410 | |
100 | 400 | |
150 | 385 | |
HISTAR®460 | 100 | 460 |
140 | 450 |
The above values are those given in the product standards EN 10025-2:2004, EN 10025-4:2004 and ETA-10/0156 [6] for open sections. The use of the values in the product standards is specified in the UK National Annex to EN 1993-1-1.
When sections are available in HISTAR®, the following material strengths have been used:
- Where the maximum element thickness is no greater than 40 mm, S355 or S460 steel strengths have been used, as appropriate.
- Where the maximum element thickness is greater than 40 mm, HISTAR® 355 or HISTAR® 460 steel strengths have been used, as appropriate.
The tables indicate when HISTAR® steel strengths have been used when calculating the design resistance.
